We tend to file things under “must go” and “meh”. Kalanggaman Island is firmly in the MUST GO file. The sea is electric blue, the sand is white and fine, the palms are numerous and there isn't a resort in sight. This is the tropical island of dreams. That sandbar, that sea… Argh. It’s ridiculous.
The award for the most photogenic island goes to Kalanggaman. (Don't believe us? Check our Instagram @pieceofthat)
These are the things to know:
Go there, take a book and just chill the fuck out.
You can get to Kalanggaman Island from a variety of places in the area but we went from Malapascua. It’s a brilliant day trip but if you fancy a little castaway experience, you can take a tent and spend the night. We can only imagine how mind-blowing the night skies must be. There are a few BBQ stations and picnic tables dotted around so if you spend the night pack a picnic!
Getting there from Malapascua:
Walking around Malapascua you will be approached constantly with offers to go to Kalanggaman so you don’t have to look too far to find a boat. There are big boats going all day and you’ll be piled on deck with about 30 others for the hour (or thereabouts) it takes to get you there. Oh don't worry, this isn't a group thing so you’re not stuck with these randoms all day. Unless you want to be, you creepy fuck.
The cost of your boat will include a simple lunch under the palms. Fish, pork and rice is the usual but bring your own water and bring lots of it. We ran out of water and the island shop did too! Fuuuck. Warm Coke was the only thing going. Dehydrated doesn't even begin to describe…
