COOKING LESSIONS IN AMLAPURA, BALI
As you know, we feel pretty passionately about good food and wonderful locations, so when you get both things in one shot it’s a rare and beautiful thing.
If you’re as obsessed with food as we are, the most worthwhile day-trip you’ll take in Bali will be up the East Coast to a village called Amlapura. It might be a little far if you’re in Seminyak or Kuta but trust us on this one…
Penny, the owner of BALI ASLI, has created quite something here. The restaurant itself is an open structure that is just frankly breathtaking and the view of the rice paddies and Mount Agung will knock you the fuck out. It is magical.
We went for one of Penny’s cooking classes (we did “A Day in the life of a Balinese Lady” - this is one of many) starting at the market where we learnt this:
- We have no idea what real fruit and veg look and taste like. WTF are the supermarkets selling us?!
- Penny is AWESOME. A total inspiration.
The market visit was followed by the cooking class in the restaurant where we drank Palm Sugar Mojitos, cooked gorgeous food and had great chats all morning. By the time we sat down to eat our lunch and drink Penny’s home brewed fruit beer, we were totally blissed out and haven't stopped talking about it since! If we had to rate this venue/experience/Penny out of 10, we would give 13 million.
Also, the toilets only have three walls… Where else can you have a wee surrounded by greenery and looking at a volcano? Hmmm?
PS. If you answer was camping, we can no longer be friends.
Go, cook, eat, drink and let us know what you thought!
